SALEM, MA
A Natural Approach to Chemistry
This seminar takes place in Salem, Massachusetts at the Salem Waterfront Hotel - just steps from shopping, restaurants and major attractions including the Peabody Essex Museum, House of Seven Gables, Salem Maritime Museum, the replica Tall-Ship "Friendship" and the Salem Witch Museum.
Join author Tom Hsu for exciting week of chemistry, based on his new book, A Natural Approach to Chemistry. This exciting new course makes quantitative, hands-on chemistry accessible to ALL students. Using the "5-E" inquiry model developed by BSCS, the new course is lab-based and uses a unique Chemistry Lab System (CLS). The CLS includes a controlled desktop heat source that is safe and easy to use. Imagine doing the phase change curve for water perfectly in six minutes! The CLS also includes an RGB spectrophotometer that brings modern chemistry techniques within range of all learners. In all, more than fifty new labs have been developed that span the complete range of quantitative chemistry without the use of toxic chemicals.
The curriculum fully integrates a modern approach to chemistry that stresses a molecular understanding of why chemistry happens. The concepts of energy, systems, and atoms weave chemistry into a unified, comprehensible, whole right from the early chapters. Including a brand new text, lab manual, and lab equipment package, this new course is a perfect fit for schools seeking to offer chemistry to a wider student population – especially those with a ninth grade physics option. Selected labs and DVD materials will be provided for all teachers. This course is suitable for all high school chemistry teachers.
